Our journey from Santiago de Cuba to our last stop, Baracoa, took us to the most eastern side of the country to the Guantánamo province. We drove though the green country side of again lots of palm trees and cactus fences.
We stopped for coffee in Guantánamo city to see what it's all about. We easily got convinced that it is certainly another really Cuban city and that there is much more to it than just the nearby US naval base. And yes, there is that song that we've by now heard about a 100 times since we got to Cuba. Guantanamera! Probably the most well known Cuban song. About a guy who sings to his love who has left him, a girl from Guantánamo.
If you do not feeling like swinging your hips while listening to this there definitely is something very wrong with you!!
75 Cubans around the world singing Guantanamera
75 Cubans around the world singing Guantanamera
(or at least google and try another version, there're hundreds out there!)
And then there is the bay. Having seen many pictures of prisoners in orange jumpsuits and having read all related news stories, we were curious about the bay then got the opportunity to get a 'touristic' glimpse from afar. Just past the bay and the Cuban military base is Mirador La Gobernadora from where you can get a quick explanation from a guide and then view the bay through a pair of binoculars. The front part of the bay which you can hardly see, belongs to the US and the rest is still under Cuban rule.
No indication of anybody running around dressed in orange or fierce men marching up and down with riffles swinging from there shoulders! Just a peaceful scene of beautiful blue sky and white clouds over the seemingly peaceful bay and green country side!

We had been satisfied and continued our journey east and then over the mountain to Baracoa.
